Specialization

Graduates of the Department of Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry can work as employees of research organizations, manufacturing laboratories, pharmaceutical enterprises, teachers of chemistry in universities, technical schools, general schools, lyceums, gymnasiums. During the period of study at the university, they receive a fundamental chemical profile training, acquire the skills of carrying out experimental synthetic work and physical and chemical methods for studying organic compounds. Receiving a high level of theoretical and practical training, our graduates easily adapt to modern working conditions. They successfully work both in Ukraine and in the countries of near and far abroad. At the department is licensed postgraduate study in the specialty "102 Chemistry".

The Department of Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry has a Branch of the Department at the AV Bogatsky Physico-Chemical Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (headed by Prof. Kamalov G.L., Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine). Here, some students of the department undergo special training and perform qualification work. They use the modern laboratory equipment and instruments in their daily work, and also have the opportunity to communicate with famous scientists at lectures and carry out research under their direction.

Special courses of organic chemistry department:

  1. Methods of organic synthesis.
  2. Fundamentals of Theoretical Organic Chemistry.
  3. Physicochemical methods of studying organic compounds.
  4. Stereochemistry.
  5. Methodology and organization of scientific research.
  6. Elements of modern information technologies in scientific research and education.
  7. Main raw materials sources for organic synthesis.
  8. Heterocyclic compounds.
  9. Base technological processes of organic synthesis.
  10. Organic compounds for polymerization processes.
  11. Modern methods of intensive training in organic chemistry.

Scientific cooperation with Ukrainian and international institutions

The researchers of the department maintain scientific cooperation (realization of the joint research with the use of up-to-date equipment of partners, joint publications, scientific training etc.) with the following Ukrainian organizations: Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine (Kyiv), Institute of Chemistry of High-Molecular Compounds of the NAS of Ukraine (Kyiv), Institute of Monocrystals of the NAS of Ukraine (Kharkiv), Kyiv National T.G.Shevchenko University (Kyiv); as well as foreign partners: Regensburg University (Germany), University of Tripoli (Libya).

Information for potential partners of the department

An efficient methods for the synthesis of different substituted β-diketones and their metal complexes, including those ones that contain the unsaturated fragments, have been developed. The homo-, copolymer ligands and metal polymers containing one or more metals have been obtained. The macroinitiators allowing to obtain branched and grafted polymers have been for the first time synthesized on the base of vinyl-β-diketonates. The research cooperation for investigation of properties of these functional polymers and their application as a catalysts, sensors, complexation agents, bactericidal compounds is proposed.

A series of acenaphthene, naphthalic anhydride and naphthalimide derivatives have been synthesized that are potential fluorophores and biologically active compounds. It is proposed to carry out joint studies of the spectral properties of these compounds with a view to their further application as biological markers and probes, luminescent sensors; study of the mechanisms of organic reactions using acenaphthylene derivatives as model compounds.

The historical review:

Organic Chemistry department was established in 1865, since the opening of the University in Odessa. The first chemist-organic scientist of the University was Professor Sokolov N.N. One of the creators of the first Russian chemical journal. In different years at the department worked prof. Markovnikov V.V., closest student of Butlerov AM, prof. Melikishvili P.G., Petriashvili V.M., Petrenko-Kritchenko P.I. Academician Zelinsky ND, a graduate of the Odessa University, defended his master's and doctoral dissertations there and worked at the department before his going to Moscow University, where he created the world-famous school of organic chemists. In the general course of scientific research, the stereochemical direction was paramount. A study was made of the geometric, optical isomerism of organic compounds and spatial factors in the course of chemical reactions. These works intensively developed in the following years. From 1959 to 1982 the Department of Organic Chemistry was headed by Academician A.V. Bogatsky, a well-known specialist in the field of stereochemistry, fine organic synthesis, chemistry of physiologically active substances. During this period, the academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Andronati S.A., academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Kamalov G.L., Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Lukyanenko N.G., prof. Gren A.I. also worked at the department. From 1983 to 2015, the department was headed by prof. Voloshanovskiy I.S., from 2015 to 2016 – by prof. Anikin V.F., from 2017 to 2023 – by prof. Ishkov Yu.V., from 2023 – by prof. Shevchenko O. V.
